Providing you with better water quality

We’re committed to reducing reliance on storm overflows, helping to improve water quality in rivers and the sea, especially in bathing waters. Storm overflows work like a safety valve on the wastewater system. They are typically used when heavy rain overwhelms the system.

Finding solutions for each area

To address storm overflow use, we need to find tailor-made solutions for each area. Solutions for Combe Martin include adding a new wet well and installing additional pipes.

Programme of work

We’re planning for improvement works, which will take around eight weeks, to start on Monday 27 January 2025 in Glen Lyn car park

Date Activity
Monday 27th January- Monday 24th March 2025 Closure of Glen Lyn car park - Installation of new storm tank.
Monday 3rd March - Friday 14th March 2025 Closure of road from Glen Lyn car park to the junction with Cross Street - Installation of additional pipes.

Separating sewers and installing storage

If we can keep rainwater out of the main sewage system, it’s much less likely that storm overflows will be needed. In January 2025 we’ll be installing a new wet well in Combe Martin to increase the storage capacity of the storm overflow, this wastewater can then be treated. We plan to complete the work by March 2025. Once the work is complete the investment should result in improved water quality in the sea and rivers around Combe Martin.

This will provide 12,000 litres more storm storage
