Catchment Systems Thinking Cooperative (CaSTCo) is a national partnership led by United Utilities and the Rivers Trust to help revolutionise the health of rivers in England and Wales. This project is being delivered across 10 demonstration catchments with our involvement being in the Tamar demo. Together, with the Westcountry Rivers Trust and University of Exeter, we are taking upstream thinking one step further to enhance our data and insight into river health through citizen- led monitoring activities and innovative modelling techniques.
As part of the CaSTCo project, Exeter University are in the process of identifying critical entry points for rural overland flows into the Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) network to determine optimal locations for implementing nature-based and Green First solutions. This approach will inform policy recommendations and alleviate pressure on CSOs ultimately leading to cleaner, safer water for communities and safeguarding the environment.
