With 860 miles of coastline, desalination is a logical option to explore and forms part of additional investment we are making this year in new water resource schemes. We have found a potential site for desalination in Cornwall, where we are currently running detailed suitability assessments. We will share dates of our next phase in due course. We are working closely with the Environment Agency and Cornwall Council to get work started as early possible.
Our target to 2025 is to increase water resources available in Cornwall by c.45%, and in Devon by c.30%, which is being delivered through our reinvestment of c.£125 million.
We are finding and fixing more leaks than ever before. Using satellites to find water leaks two metres underground, invisible to the human eye, using drone pilots to cover hard to reach places across Dartmoor and Exmoor, using detection dogs to find leaks in challenging terrain, and fixing around 2,000 leaks a month.
With around 30% of leaks now typically found on customers’ own properties, we have extended our offer to fix these leaks for free – saving enough water to date to serve the equivalent of 8,000 homes. We are investing £87m to reduce leakage by up 15% by 2030, enough to fill 2,600 Olympic swimming pools per year.

We constantly review water resilience and exploring ways in which we can protect our customers from the ongoing impacts of climate change and drought. As part of this work, we are currently undertaking preliminary studies into how Bristol Water and South West Water can work together to meet the water needs of everyone across the region for years to come.
